A closer look at what you need to prepare matcha
In Japan, preparing matcha is an art. For centuries, this green tea has been particularly prized for its unmistakable umami and vegetal notes. This bitter beverage is prepared during a veritable ceremony, which involves handling various utensils: a bowl, a bamboo whisk, and a spatula or measuring spoon.
To begin, it's recommended to sift one to two grams of matcha into the bowl to prevent lumps from forming. Hot water can then be poured over the powder, but be careful that it's not boiling, as this will create too much bitterness. It's advisable to wait until the water temperature is between 70 and 80 degrees Celsius. At this point, whisk the drink with a bamboo whisk, using W or M-shaped movements, until a fine foam appears on the surface. Then, simply enjoy your matcha directly from the bowl before the foam settles!
At Betjeman & Barton, we understand that preparing matcha is a delicate ritual, imbued with the utmost respect. That's why we offer you quality products to create a delicious matcha:
• Matcha bowl, chawan, made of ceramic and with ideal dimensions of 8 cm high with a diameter of 10 cm.
• Matcha whisk, chasen, made of bamboo, for whisking the drink properly. After use, it can be rinsed with clean water and then placed on its whisk rest, before being carefully wiped with a clean, dry cloth.
• A bright green porcelain whip holder, designed to hold the chasen.
• A tea scoop, or chasaku, is used to measure out the exact amount of powder needed for preparation. For 100 ml of water, it is recommended to pour two scoops into the bowl, then whisk vigorously to obtain the creamy texture on the surface so prized in matcha.
Beginners can opt for our complete matcha kit, which includes all these utensils, for a successful ceremony.
