The Frosty Little History of Iced Tea
Iced tea is actually much newer than the age-old hot tea.The recipe was first mentioned in a cookbook by Estelle Woods Wilcox in the 1870s. The formula involved brewing hot tea before letting it cool and adding a little sugar, a few slices of lemon, and of course, ice cubes.
While the original recipe gradually found variations, it wasn't until the early 20th century that iced tea became popular, particularly in the United States. It was there that the highly acclaimed World's Fair was held in 1904: the weather being extremely hot, the owner of a tea plantation decided to distribute samples into which he slipped ice cubes!
