The Accessories Designer
The creator of accomplice objects
Each accessory is a unique piece. At Betjeman & Barton, we design it as an integral part of the experience. The accessories designer imagines these tasting companions with the eye of a couturier and the hand of a craftsman. He works the lines, volumes, and textures as one would work with drapery or a rare fabric. He designs teapots like silhouettes, spoons like jewelry, boxes like jewel cases.
His work is at a crossroads: between the Japanese tradition of raw cast iron, the French elegance of porcelain, and the contemporary audacity of blown glass or lacquered metal. Every detail counts: the grip, the comfort of use, the sound of the lid closing.
Just as a perfumer chooses his top notes and base accords, he considers the sensory coherence of an object with the moment it accompanies. He creates accessories that are never decorative, but always expressive. Because for him, the act of serving, stirring, or sharing tea must be as beautiful as the taste that follows.
An eye for beauty and goodness
Finding the right accessory, the one that enhances without ever stealing the show, is a matter of art. Sourcing accessories and delicacies is the work of a sensitive scout, an enlightened curator. The person who does it roams the workshops like a gallery, looking for the rare object, the well-executed gesture, the forgotten skill, or the meaningful collaboration.
This profession is based on uncompromising standards: quality of materials, quality of ingredients, aesthetics of shapes, and values upheld by the creators. You must know the nobility of a cast iron from the Oigen foundry, the finesse of a Degrenne porcelain, the elegance of a Montmartre biscuit, or the precision of a Cluizel chocolate. The selected accessory must never be a simple "extra": it extends, it accompanies, it says something about the House and those who live there.
This profession, halfway between haute couture and the art of hospitality, is based on a fine intuition: that of beauty that makes sense, that of goodness that is not always seen but that is savored. At Betjeman & Barton, sourcing is the praise of taste in all its forms.
