Established in 1854 by Englishman David Wilson as Wilson Tea Estate, Happy Valley is one of Darjeeling's oldest tea gardens. Perched at 2,100 meters above sea level in the Himalayan foothills, this 177-hectare estate was founded by a passionate visionary who transformed this wild land into a veritable tea paradise. Wilson laid the foundations for an exceptional terroir whose renown has endured through the centuries, creating one of the greatest success stories in the history of tea.
The tea trees of Happy Valley, some over 150 years old, are among the oldest and most venerated in Darjeeling. Located just 3 kilometers from the town, it is the most accessible garden, offering the opportunity to discover the art of tea picking between March and November, depending on the season. This privileged location, combined with an exceptional microclimate and rich soils, produces remarkably pure teas that capture the very essence of the Himalayan mountains.
In the early 1930s, Percy Barton, co-founder of our company, discovered this garden during a trip to India and was immediately captivated by the beauty of the terroir and the excellence of its teas. This pivotal encounter forged an enduring link between Happy Valley and our family history. Today, we perpetuate this heritage by choosing its organic version, the perfect embodiment of our values: respect for the land, artisanal excellence, and a commitment to sustainable environmental practices, to offer our tea lovers an exceptional tea.
Since the 2000s, Happy Valley has distinguished itself through its conversion to organic farming, responding to the growing demand for pesticide-free teas and environmentally friendly practices. Its ethical approach is accompanied by a strong social commitment to the estate's workers, including housing, access to healthcare, and educational programs, thus reinforcing the aura of this legendary and pioneering garden among high-altitude organic plantations in Darjeeling.
